L-carnitine is a natural compound that is involved in energy metabolism, specifically in the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells. Because mitochondria use fatty acids to produce energy, L-carnitine is often promoted as a “fat burner” or as a supplement to increase endurance. However, this description oversimplifies how it works. The fact that a substance is involved in fatty acid metabolism does not necessarily mean that its additional administration automatically increases the burning of body fat. The human body can synthesize L-carnitine, while significant amounts are also obtained from foods of animal origin. In most healthy people, normal production and dietary intake are sufficient to meet needs. For this reason, no recommended daily intake has been established for healthy adults. The effectiveness of L-carnitine supplements depends on the population, form, dosage, duration of use, diet, and type of exercise. The data to date suggest that some benefits are possible, but they are usually smaller than those claimed in commercial advertisements.
